This study analyzed the productivity trend of healthcare resources by region in Korea. Malmquist Productivity Index(MPI) was produced with the panel data of 16 metropolitan cities for 10 years from 2002 to 2011. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, MPI from 2002 to 2011 was increased by an annual average of more than 1.8%. The productivity increase was due mainly to technical progress and the improvement of pure technical efficiency, and the scale efficiency hardly contributed to the productivity increase. Second, there were big differences in productivity changes by regions and these trends were continued for study years. Regions that had the greatest increase showed about a 63% increase from 2002 to 2011 while regions that had the biggest decrease showed about a 14% decrease. Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gangwon, and Gyeongnam showed high productivity increases, while Daejeon had a big productivity decrease. Future studies will need to analyze factors contributing the differences of productivity among regions.
